CES 2022: This Smartphone Scans Your Food (and Probably Thinks You're Fat)

The Changhong H2 smartphone told me I'm fatty. It is the first telephone to include the SCiO sensor from Consumer Physics, a miniaturised near-infrared spectroscopy sensor that measures the light reflected off a sample item to determine its composition.

CES 2022 BugIt tin can, for example, tell you how good for you your food is, whether your pills are fake, and what you're feeding your pets.

Personally, I saw several demos showing how the Changhong H2 tin exist used in unlike contexts. In each case, y'all hold upwardly the corner of the phone to a substance, run a special app containing a database, and get the results in a few seconds.

The smartphone showed what it claimed are the differing sugar values of fruit, the caloric content of a basin of noodles (one time yous input portion size), and said it is able to tell real medication from fake. It as well tested my trunk fat, and, well, I don't think I'm fatty. But they said that app is buggy.

The uses hither should be obvious.

Lots of older people society medicine from away to salve money; making sure that it is what they say it is, is important. You could use it to test drinks at bars to make sure they aren't drugged. Anyone who cooks knows at that place's a plague of simulated olive oil out there right at present. Just mostly, the device gives yous much more knowledge nigh what y'all're putting into your body.

"What we're doing to spectrometry is what mobile phones did to calculating power," Consumer Physics VP, Yaron Dycian, said.

Across the sensor, the Changhong H2 is a chunky, mid-range phone.

It has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor, 16GB storage, and a gigantic but somewhat depression-res 6in screen. It runs Android 6.0.one. The epitome on show at CES 2022 is full of debugging software; it clearly isn't a terminal unit. The smartphone isn't actively awful, only you're here for the sensor.

SCiO had been the subject of some controversy when it raised The states$2.seven million on Kickstarter in 2022-2015 but did non deliver sensors to backers. Its Kickstarter folio was ultimately taken downwards as role of a trademark dispute. And since this is unique technology, it's very hard to tell if it really works.

The Changhong H2 will initially ringlet out in China, but it's coming to the Usa subsequently in 2022, Dycian said. It will price a mere US$433 in China.
